Composition language works best when it describes observable spatial relationships. Pair a structure with subject placement, camera distance, depth, and intended reading order instead of dropping a rule name into an overloaded prompt.

A repeatable workflow

  1. Choose the reading order

    Decide what viewers see first, second, and last before naming a compositional device.

  2. Describe spatial relations

    State where the focal subject sits, what frames it, how layers overlap, and where quiet space remains.

  3. Control camera distance

    Match close, medium, wide, overhead, low, or eye-level framing to the information the image needs.

  4. Compare structures

    Run centered, thirds, diagonal, foreground-frame, and layered alternatives with other variables locked.

Worked example

For an outdoor lunch, “wide eye-level scene, group on the lower-right third, tree branch as soft foreground frame, path leading from left, open sky across upper-left for copy” provides more control than “rule of thirds, cinematic.”
