The central idea

Prompt the visual consequence you need. Light direction, source size, contrast, falloff, color relationship, haze, depth, and camera distance matter more than a long list of expensive camera models and lens brands.

A repeatable workflow

  1. Choose the camera relationship

    Set close, medium, wide, overhead, low, or eye-level based on intimacy, scale, and required context.

  2. Place the key light

    Describe source direction, apparent size, softness, height, and the shadow behavior it creates.

  3. Shape contrast and color

    Set value range, fill level, practical sources, warm/cool relationship, and background separation.

  4. Test one light variable

    Compare window-soft, hard side, top pool, rim, or diffuse overcast while holding the scene stable.

Worked example

A ceramic object can move from calm daylight to sculptural drama by changing one large left window into a small hard side source with deep fill reduction. That visible instruction is more useful than naming a camera body that has no reliable causal effect.
